Russian has a fearsome reputation built on the wrong thing. The alphabet takes a weekend. What actually takes time is that every noun changes shape depending on its job in the sentence, and that almost every verb comes in a pair, one for the doing and one for the finishing. Get those and the famously free word order becomes a tool rather than a threat.

Nouns, adjectives, numbers and names all change ending according to their role. It is the bulk of the work, and it comes much faster when the endings arrive inside sentences you meant to say.
Two verbs where English has one, split by whether the action was completed. Learners can produce correct sentences for months while quietly choosing the wrong half of every pair.
Мать and мат differ by a softening you cannot hear until someone points at it. It is the sound difference that most marks out a foreign accent, more than any vowel.
There are no articles, and word order is loose. The endings carry all of it, which is why they are not optional.

A correction names the case and why the sentence needed it, so the pattern transfers instead of being memorised one word at a time.
Choosing the wrong half of a verb pair is invisible in a textbook exercise and obvious in a conversation about what you did yesterday.

A few days of casual effort. Around a third of the letters are familiar, a third are familiar shapes with different sounds, and the rest are new. It is by far the smallest obstacle in Russian.
They are the reason Russian takes a while, and they are learnable in the order you meet them rather than all at once. Speaking makes this much less painful than tables do, because you learn the endings attached to sentences you actually wanted to say.
